TaxJar AutoFile

TaxJar + CMS Max

Use TaxJar AutoFile when you want TaxJar to file your sales tax returns

TaxJar AutoFile is TaxJar's optional filing service for enrolled states. Once a merchant is successfully enrolled, TaxJar can use the merchant's TaxJar data to prepare and submit sales tax returns and remittances on the merchant's behalf.

CMS Max can send tax calculation and transaction data to TaxJar, but AutoFile enrollment, subscription, filing authorization, and payment details are managed through the merchant's own TaxJar account.

1. Connect TaxJar

Create or log into your TaxJar account, generate your API token, and add that key to CMS Max so tax calculations and reports are tied to your account.

2. Configure nexus

Add the states and locations where you are required to collect tax. Your accountant or tax advisor should confirm where you have nexus.

3. Enroll in AutoFile

Enroll directly in TaxJar for each state where you want TaxJar to file. AutoFile is separate from the TaxJar subscription and may have filing fees.

What AutoFile does

  • Uses TaxJar sales tax reports and transaction data to prepare enrolled state returns.
  • Submits sales tax filings through TaxJar for states where enrollment is approved.
  • Helps merchants manage filing deadlines when they collect tax in multiple states.
  • Requires accurate TaxJar data, correct nexus settings, and successful AutoFile enrollment.

What CMS Max does

  • Connects your CMS Max ecommerce checkout to TaxJar for tax calculation.
  • Uses the Tax Locations you configure to decide when tax should be calculated.
  • Can help you place your TaxJar API key and confirm the integration is working.
  • Does not enroll you in AutoFile or determine where your business has nexus.

AutoFile setup checklist

  1. Confirm your TaxJar plan supports the API and the reporting features your business needs.

  3. Add the API token in CMS Max and confirm checkout tax calculations are working.
  4. Configure your CMS Max Tax Locations based on where you have nexus.
  5. Review your TaxJar reports for each state where you collect tax.
  6. Enroll in AutoFile inside TaxJar for each state you want TaxJar to file.
  7. Monitor TaxJar emails and filing deadlines, especially before the first filing period.
