Choosing a Blog Type

How to pick the right schema type for your blog posts so search engines can categorize your content accurately.

Overview

Every blog post has a Schema Type setting. This tells search engines what kind of content the post contains, which helps them categorize and display it more accurately in search results. All three types are treated equally by search engines — choosing the right one is about accuracy, not gaining a ranking advantage.

Quick Decision Guide

  • BlogPosting — regular posts, tutorials, opinion pieces, and personal insights
  • NewsArticle — breaking news, press releases, and time-sensitive announcements
  • Article — everything else, or when you are not sure

BlogPosting

Use this for the everyday blog content that represents your thoughts, experiences, or expertise.

Good fits:

  • Regular blog posts and articles
  • How-to guides and tutorials
  • Opinion pieces and commentary
  • Personal experiences and stories
  • Industry insights and analysis

Examples:

  • "5 Tips for Improving Your Online Store's Conversion Rate"
  • "Why We Redesigned Our Checkout Flow"
  • "A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Our Busy Season"

NewsArticle

Reserve this for content that reports on current events or time-sensitive announcements. Only use it when the post is genuinely newsworthy.

Good fits:

  • Breaking news and current events
  • Press releases and official announcements
  • Company news (funding rounds, partnerships, new launches)
  • Industry news coverage
  • Time-sensitive updates

Examples:

  • "We're Excited to Announce Our New Partnership"
  • "New Regulations Affecting Online Retailers Take Effect Today"
  • "Company Raises Investment Round to Expand Operations"

Important: Do not use NewsArticle for regular blog posts. Using it for content that is not actually news may confuse search engines about what your site publishes.

Article

The general-purpose option. Use this when your content does not clearly fit the other two categories, or when you are not sure which to choose.

Good fits:

  • General informational content
  • Case studies and customer success stories
  • Comprehensive guides and resources
  • Product feature announcements
  • Educational content

Examples:

  • "A Complete Guide to Managing Your Online Inventory"
  • "How One of Our Customers Doubled Their Repeat Sales"
  • "Everything You Need to Know About Local Delivery"

Common Questions

Does the schema type affect my search rankings?

No. All three types are treated equally by search engines. The choice simply helps search engines categorize your content more accurately — it does not directly impact where your posts appear in search results.

Can I change the schema type after publishing?

Yes. You can update the schema type on any post at any time. The change takes effect as soon as you save.

What should I use when I am not sure?

Choose Article. It is the most general type and works well for all content. You can always update it to something more specific later if needed.
