Setting Browser Titles

How to control the title that appears in browser tabs and search engine results for each page on your site.

Overview

The browser title is the text that appears in a browser tab when someone visits a page, and it is also the clickable headline shown in Google search results. Keeping these titles accurate, descriptive, and keyword-rich is one of the most impactful things you can do for your search rankings.

Why Browser Titles Matter

  • Search results — The browser title is the first thing people see when your page appears in Google. A clear, relevant title encourages more clicks.
  • Browser tabs — When visitors have multiple tabs open, a descriptive title helps them quickly find your page.
  • Bookmarks — The title is used as the default name when someone bookmarks a page.

Managing Browser Titles

The Browser Titles section in SEO Max gives you a central place to review and update the titles for all your pages in one view, without needing to edit each page individually.

  1. Click SEO Max in your admin menu
  2. Select Browser Titles
  3. Browse the list of pages and their current titles
  4. Click on any page to update its browser title

Tips for Writing Good Browser Titles

  • Keep titles between 50 and 60 characters so they display fully in search results without being cut off
  • Place the most important keywords near the beginning of the title
  • Make each page's title unique — avoid using the same title for multiple pages
  • Describe what the page is actually about, using language your customers would naturally search for
  • Include your business name in the title, typically at the end (for example, "Contact Us | Acme Co.")
