Product Tags
Create reusable descriptive product tags and expose selected groups as storefront filters
Overview
Product tags describe what a product is. For example, a Material group could contain Metal, Wood, and Glass. A product can have more than one value from the same group, and the same value can be reused on any number of products.
Tags do not create a choice on the product page and do not affect SKU, price, stock, or the item added to an order. Use product options or variants when a customer must choose a value before purchasing.
While Product Tags is enabled, tag group and value names are also included in product search. For example, searching for Metal finds products assigned Material: Metal. Disabling Product Tags removes those tag terms from storefront search without deleting the assignments.
Create a Tag Group
- Navigate to eCommerce > Store Settings > Features and enable Product Tags.
- Navigate to eCommerce > Product Tags.
- Click Create Tag Group.
- Enter a name, such as Material or Style.
- Enable Show as a storefront filter if customers should be able to filter product lists by this group.
- Click Create.
The handle is created from the name and acts as the group's stable identifier. It cannot be changed after the group is created. You can still rename the displayed name at any time.
Add Values
- Open a tag group.
- Under Tag Values, click Create Tag Value.
- Enter a value such as Metal.
- Repeat for the other reusable values in that group.
Value names can be renamed without changing existing product assignments. Handles remain fixed so the identity of a renamed value stays stable.
Assign Tags to a Product
- Navigate to eCommerce > Products and open a product.
- Open the Tags tab.
- Search for and select one or more values. Each result is shown as Group: Value so identically named values in different groups are clear.
- If the value does not exist, use the create button beside the field. Select its group or create a new group in the same dialog, then enter the new value.
- Save the product.
Selecting Material: Metal describes the whole product. It does not ask the customer to choose Metal at checkout.
Group names and handles are unique regardless of capitalization. Value names and handles are likewise unique within their group, so Red and red cannot both exist under Color. The same value may exist under a different group.
Import Tags from a POS
When a supported POS connector is installed, open its Tag Mappings tab after fetching products. Select an existing CMS Max tag group, then enter the POS field path that supplies its values. The sample-product selector previews the imported value before you save.
CMS Max creates missing values automatically. Each mapped group is controlled by the POS: a later product sync replaces that group's assignments and removes its assignment when the mapped source becomes empty. Manually assigned tags in groups that are not mapped remain unchanged. Disable Product Tags to pause POS tag updates without deleting the saved mappings or assignments.
Storefront Filters
A group appears in the product-list and search filters when:
- Product Tags is enabled in Store Settings > Features;
- Show as a storefront filter is enabled; and
- at least one visible product in the current list has one of its values.
Selecting several values in one group broadens the results. For example, Metal and Wood means Metal or Wood. Selecting values in different groups narrows the results. For example, Material: Metal and Style: Modern means Metal and Modern.
Tag filters work together with category, brand, price, variant, and search filters. Filter selections are kept in the page URL so the result can be shared.
The available categories, brands, tag values, and variant options are limited to products the list or search can return. On a paginated list this includes matching products on every page, not only the current page. When pagination is disabled, the configured product limit defines the complete set used for both the cards and their filters.
Product List widgets show assigned values as badges on grid product cards by default. Use Show Product Tags on Cards to hide them on an individual product list. Product lists saved while Product Tags are disabled also begin showing badges when the feature is later enabled.
Rename or Delete Tags
Renaming a group or value updates its displayed name everywhere without removing assignments.
Deleting is permanent:
- Deleting a value removes it from every product that uses it.
- Deleting a group deletes all of its values and removes all of those assignments.
- There is no archive or restore state.
The delete confirmation shows the impact before the record is removed. If the same value is created again later, it is a new value and must be assigned to products again.
